Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed are those who take refuge in him. (Psalm 34:8)
How can we know that God is good?
Today's verse offers us this simple invitation: taste and see! It's that simple: if we want to see and experience the goodness of God, we need to experience it. God is Lord, and therefore, He cannot be tested in a lab, but He is available for personal relationships.
Just like in cooking, when we hear about a delicious dish, we become much more aware if we know what ingredients are used. Our intuition about that food will increase (it’s really good!) if we read the recipe and understand the step-by-step process. However, nothing compares to the perception, the tasting of that wonderful dish. Even if we have a nice photograph of the finished plate, we will only know how excellent it is if we taste it.
With God, it’s similar. We need to taste Him. Not at the level of taste, but through our mind, body, soul, and spirit. We have to appreciate Him in our own real and true experience, so that we may enjoy the sweetness of His incomparable goodness and grace.
Naturally, most of us expect to have these things instantly: we want to see (enjoy) God first and then join Him and appreciate Him. However, the logic here presents itself in an inverse sense: before seeing, we must taste and believe in God. As Christ's words say: "If you believe, you will see the glory of God" (John 11:40).
Whoever tastes God finds refuge in Him and rejoices because of it!
- Discover God personally! Testimonies and stories inspire, but you must seek Christ to see Him in your life.
- Tasting God is not mechanical or legalistic. Get to know Him through the Word, faith, and obedience.
- Don’t just believe that God is good; experience it in your life.
- Draw near to Him with prayer and delve into His Word. His goodness will always follow you.
- God is good, all the time! All the time, God is good!
To pray: Dear God, I want to experience the reality of your goodness in my life. Help me to trust in you, to obey you, and to love you, Lord, for all that you are and all that you have done. Teach me your ways, so that day by day I can recognize you and see your goodness wherever I go. Heavenly Father, help your people to believe and find refuge in you, savoring your Word in your presence daily with attentiveness and appreciation. Only then, Lord, will we be more than happy, as your Word tells us. In Jesus' name, I pray and thank you for these things, amen.
